Operation BBQ Relief Central PA

I know, I know…I haven’t ‘Blogged’ in a bit, but I have a good reason for my lack of key pounding…I was pounding the pavement (literally) of the Sam’s Club parking lot in Harrisburg as part of what became known as ‘Operation BBQ Relief Central PA’!

Last weekend, myself and two other Cookers whom I had never met before (Bob the BBQ Bandit and Rob Gibson – Coal Cracken BBQ) got together with Andy from the Mid-Atlantic BBQ Association, about 20 Volunteers and the Chief & Members of the Rutherford Volunteer Fire Company to do something incredible…prepare and send into the most affected communities about 5,000 ‘Real Deal’ BBQ Meals!

We converted an empty parking lot into a full commercial kitchen with a production area and distribution facility, cooked meals, gave news interviews, welcomed donations from residents of Central PA and managed to provide these meals entirely from the support of citizens and community businesses!

Regular Blog readers will know that I spent time cooking in Morgan County, Alabama and then again as a very small part of ‘Operation BBQ Relief Joplin’ following the horrendous tornadoes there…I found both to be very worthy experiences.  I had initially planned to travel to Vermont last week and New Jersey this week, but fate intervened and people needed some BBQ love right here at home!

There are still many communities hurting here in PA and also in VT and NJ…it’s easy to forget when the flood waters recede and news cameras leave, but please don’t!  Do what you can to help these folks who now have to rebuild their entire lives…keep them in mind!  AND….I’ll keep on Blogging, sorry again for my temporary break!! :)
